WESPA is absolutely delighted to announce yet another major coup as we continue to consolidate our position as THE leading sports academy in the country.
The Academy has appointed one of the World’s most-respected fitness coaches, Dave Billows, to oversee and fine-tune the Strength and Conditioning work undertaken by our young athletes.
Dave is already well known to a generation of sport-lovers in Great Britain after extensive and much-lauded work with elite professional footballers, World Boxing Champions and world-class athletes across a wide variety of sports.
Dave also made his mark with the senior England squad, working alongside then manager Roy Hodgson, firstly as National Team Fitness Coach and then as Sports Scientist to the Under-18 and Under-19 teams.
An S&C expert and a committed sports science specialist, Dave was a key member of the Everton FC backroom staff during one of the club’s most consistently successful periods with qualification for the Champions’ League and four appearances in the Uefa Cup.
Under Dave’s fitness regime, Prozone statistics showed that the Everton squad developed season on season to run both faster and further – and suffered fewer soft-tissue injuries.
During his career Dave has had the privilege of working with an array of elite-level professional athletes including international footballers Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Jamie Vardy, World Champion Boxer Tony Bellew, Olympic Decathlete Alex Kruger and international MMA Champion Mario Sukata.
“ I have been involved in some top-level and high-class projects in the past and I truly regard my new relationship with WESPA as potentially one of the most exciting, “ he said.
“ Whilst working with experienced and seasoned winners, I have always tried to champion and encourage the next generation – self-evidently they are the future.
“ WESPA and myself share the same beliefs, objectives and aspirations – hopefully I will slot in nicely alongside the array of fine coaches the Academy can already boast, “ he added.
Dave headed the development of a “ workload accumulation “ at Everton, utilising GPS and HR data from training sessions coupled with Prozone stats from games to assess the likelihood of injury or performance-reduction in individual players.
He was also a key performance coach in Everton’s youth development programme, one which produced players like Rooney, Jack Rodwell, Victor Anichebe and Ross Barkley.
“I know just how ambitious WESPA is and the logical next step is to open a centre in Liverpool to match the recently-opened one in Birkenhead, “ he said.
“I truly believe that WESPA can be a major player in the development of Great Britain’s next wave of superstar athletes. I would urge anyone – any business – with a desire to help our ambitious youngsters to step forward and join us. There are going to be exciting times ahead, “ he added.
WESPA CEO Alastair Saverimutto has no doubts that Dave’s arrival will prove to be a historic moment in the Academy’s development.
“Dave really is one of the very best in the country at what he does,“ he said. “Inside his industry he is acknowledged to be a genuine, 22-carat big-hitter. This is a wonderful appointment for WESPA. If anyone can drive our athletes to even greater personal performances it is Dave Billows.”
