WESPA FIRE NETBALL GIRLS BEAT IRELAND IN DUBLIN!

The world of top-class Netball has now been put on notice – WESPA FIRE is officially blazing a trail through the crowded ranks and heading for the top!

Just a year after the Academy followed its “ Give the Kids What They Want “ mantra by launching a Netball section, our two Under-15 teams travelled across to Dublin to stand toe to toe with the Emerald Isle’s finest – and didn’t they do us proud!
In a mini-tournament which our girls and coaches will remember and covet for many, many years, our First Team defeated the highly-rated Irish Under-19 Development Squad by a massive 42-8.
Not to be outdone, our Second Team just came out on top against the Irish Under-17 Development Squad, winning a closely-fought contest, 28-27.
A second round of fixtures the following day saw more success and, just as significantly, more progress.
Our First Team performed magnificently to end all square, 29-29, against a well-drilled and very experienced Northern Ireland Under-19 team and our Second Team just edged out the Irish Under-19 side by the narrowest of margins, winning 28-27.
Everyone at WESPA is so very proud of the professional and courteous manner in which our girls performed and carried themselves throughout a testing weekend of top-class sport.
Whilst it is, perhaps, a little unfair to single out individuals for special praise as this was very much a team effort, our vociferous travelling support was particularly appreciative of our rock-solid defensive unit of Tia Currums, Alis Francis and Alexis Mooney and the steely edge of the WESPA Fire captain, Abi Saverimutto. The attacking force of Kelly Drury, Georgia Stuart, Olivia Jacklin, Izzy Tilston and India Nellist were simply untouchable. Their movement, coolness in possession and sheer determination to be the best they could be was clear to all.

“ It really was a truly wonderful weekend – one in which our girls really did fly the WESPA flag with great pride, “ said WESPA’s Sporting Director, Alastair Saverimutto. “ The entire back room staff from Melissa Hyndman (Head Coach), Eleanor Caldwell (Ass Coach), Jaki Saxby (Ass Ass Coach) to the amazing admin management team of Tracey Drury and Jenny Mooney, have combined to make the WESPA FIRE Netball Team a force to be reckoned with. ”

Indeed, Alastair is confident that WESPA FIRE’s journey from fledgling outfit to becoming an official – and highly successful – NSL Franchise representing the Wirral, Liverpool and surrounding areas is now very much on track.

“ We have not only made great strides over the past 12 months, we have made hugely significant strides. Our aim, our ambition, is to achieve the level of NSL Franchise and then show the sporting world that there is a great deal more to Merseyside and the Wirral than football and boxing.
“ I genuinely believe that we are now on our way – and that nothing will stop us. It is my belief that WESPA FIRE is now actually changing the landscape of the English Netball scene. People are aware of us – they have noted the astonishing progress we have made,” he added.
